This is a chronological collection of contemporary fiction short stories about the life and times of Dave Riggler. Despite the chronological nature of the collections, most of the stories, the later stories in particular, can very well be read individually as standalone pieces. But the collection is short enough that the order adds a richness to the experience that would certainly be missed if read out of order.Dave Rigger has opened this reader's eyes to the daily peril inherent in the life of those with disability. And I don't mean that to sound like the author conveys a bleeding heart sentimentality to the issue; simply that I've been forced to see Dave Riggler's world through his eyes, to think about disability with his emotional insight and to think about the definition of quality of life.
Reading up on the author, I have to wonder just how much of Dave Riggler is really a fictionalization of biographical material.
Regardless, Dave Riggler's Stories is a very worthwhile read: worth the investment of time and money. I'm glad the author has penned these words, and I'm glad I've taken the time to read what he has to say.

Once again, Brian Hartman does a great job of offering short stories that can be completed in 15 minutes or less. There are a few "twist ending" type stories in the Dave Riggler's book and I would suggest it to anyone who enjoys a quick read. A recommended author in my opinion.
In a market dominated by genre fiction, it's a pleasure to find well-written "slice-of-life" stories that are character driven. Dave Riggler isn't just a handicapped person, he's a fleshed-out person who is handicapped. There's a difference. Definitely a good read.
Reading a good book is like taking a journey. That's what I did when I read David Riggler's Stories. In these short stories, you follow David through his years growing up. You take a journey with him into different times of his life and you can really feel his emotions at times. Whether it be scared, nervous, angry, happy, sadness or even relief.
In my opinion, the author picked six impressionable life events and shared them with us. I think this book was well written and easy to read. It's always nice to take a look around in another person's life and see things in a different light. It just may make a person change their way of viewing life and situations.
Many of us pass people on the street not giving thought to what their life is like, what they might be going through. When we see someone with a physical "disability" what do we do? We acknowledge. We feel. If but for a minute. We probably don't go into deep thought about what it must be like to get around, get up a flight of stairs, be stranded. We think though, we feel a bit. By revealing a tiny bit of life for someone wheelchair bound, Brian Hartman brings awareness to the mundane obstacles those physically challenged must deal with. Also, an awareness that we all connect as humans because we all face obstacles that no one gives much thought to. I recommend taking the time to look into this short story.

Brian tells of Dave Riggler and his battle with spinabifida(where the spine grows on the outside of the body) This disease impedes the ability to walk and causes neurological difficulties as well. Dave has accepted his lot in life. He doesn't take to pity very well and likes to help those in need. Everyone wants him to learn to walk but he has his opinions on that as well.
Mr. Hartman has written a great story of a young man with a crippling handicap and a strong spirit. As you read the anecdotes on Daves life you will root for him. I recommend this to anyone who likes uplifting stories and something a little different. I give this one 5 wheelchairs.
First of all, this is an easy read that I found all too short. The first stories feature the point of view of young children, then progress chronologically through various life events, all of them poignantly illustrating life from the perspective of a person who cannot walk. The stories are interesting without being overly sappy or emotional, yet they are still completely engaging.
I find very few authors are able to create children's dialog convincingly. There are a few rough spots at the beginning, but the sense of reality and ease of relating to the protagonist make up for this. As the story progressed I found myself genuinely relating to him, even though I have never been in a wheelchair for more than 10 minutes. The characters come alive, and it would be impossible to not care about them.
If Mr. Hartman continues this series I will certainly coontinue to follow it!
